PANTHERS SECURE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
PANTHERS BEAT THE BULLDOGS TO WIN DISTRICT
NOVEMBER 7th- The Permian Panthers completed an undefeated district campaign with a 33-14 win against the Midland Bulldogs Friday night at Ratliff Stadium. Permian clinched the District 2-6A title outright with Friday’s victory.
Permian would receive the opening kickoff but ran into trouble immediately, coughing up the ball on the return. The Bulldogs recovered at the Panthers’ 32 yard line.
Midland capitalized on a 12-yard touchdown run, giving the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead with a little over two minutes off the clock.
MOJO got on the board when Cayden Taylor scored on a 23-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. The Panthers missed the PAT, keeping Midland in front with 10:44 remaining in the half.
On the next Permian possession, a pass was intercepted by the Bulldogs at their own 46 yard line. But the Permian defense stood up against the Midland offense, and Permian got the ball back.
Kayden Vickers completed a deep pass of 41-yards on the next Permian drive, getting the Panthers down to the Bulldog nine yard line with 3:49 left.
A few plays later, Vickers hit on a seven-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Navarrete. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but Permian had a 12-7 lead that they would not relinquish.
After forcing another three-and-out, Permian added another touchdown before halftime as Cason Nabarrette scored on a 53-yard touchdown reception from Vickers. Iker Munoz’s PAT gave MOJO a 19-7 lead at the break.
The third quarter would be a defensive stalemate until Permian extended its lead with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Vickers to Navarrete, making the score 26-7 with 1:21 left in the third period.
The Bulldogs threatened to score on the following possession before Caleb Jamison picked off a pass at the three-yard line, returning it out to the 17.
With momentum on their side the Panthers added to their lead as Gavin Black scored on a seven-yard run, making the score 33-7 with 6:20 left in the game.
Midland High finally got back into the endzone with a four-yard touchdown run with 3:01 remaining in the contest.
With the game firmly in control the Panthers were able to run out the clock, ultimately securing a 33-14 victory.
Gavin Black rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Quarterback Kayden Vickers was 14-of-18 passing for 236 yards and three scores. Aaron Navarrette led all receivers with five catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
The win gives MOJO a 5-0 record in District 2-6A (9-1 overall) and their first outright district championship since the 2008 season.
NEXT UP- The Panthers will host the El Paso Eastlake Falcons Friday, November 14th at Ratliff Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm CST. MOJO defeated the Falcons 27-12 in Week Two of the regular season. GAMEDAY CENTRAL

OCTOBER 31st- The Permian Panthers secured a share of the District 2-6A title with a 38-25 victory over the Frenship Tigers at Peoples Bank Stadium on Friday.
Frenship received the opening kickoff but could not advance past midfield, as their fourth-down pass fell incomplete. MOJO took over and responded with an eight-play, 56-yard scoring drive capped off by a two-yard run by Gavin Black. Permian led 7-0.
The Tigers responded with a seven-play drive of 75 yards ending with a seven-yard touchdown pass. The first period ended with the teams tied at 7-7.
Frenship would take advantage of an interception on the next Permian possession, scoring in three plays to take a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Panthers hit paydirt on their next series, as Black busted through the line and raced down the sideline on a 40-yard scamper. The PAT made the score 14-14 with 3:41 remaining until the break.
The Tigers put together a quick drive that resulted in a field goal, and the teams went into the locker room with Frenship on top 17-14.
Tragedy struck the Panthers early in the third period when record-setting quarterback Jakob Garcia was knocked out of the game with an injury. Kayden Vickers entered the game in relief, and on his second snap of the game connected with Cason Nabarrette on a touchdown pass of 72 yards. Permian retook the lead at 21-17.
Iker Munoz hit a 39-yard field goal to increase Permian's advantage to 24-17 as time expired in the third period.
The defense would hold when the Tigers gambled on a fourth down attempt on the following Frenship possession, giving the Panthers good field position. MOJO made the Tigers pay when Black scored his third touchdown of the evening, this time from 11 yards out. MOJO's lead was 31-17 midway through the fourth quarter.
Down two scores and forced to pass on every play, Frenship's comeback plans were foiled when Cameron Mattingly stepped in front of a pass and made a house call from 56 yards out. The Munoz PAT made the score 38-17 Permian late in the fourth.
Frenship would score with a few seconds remaining but it was too little, too late. The clock ran out with MOJO on top 38-25.
Gavin Black led the way for MOJO with 161 yards and three scores on 24 carries. Jakob Garcia and Kayden Vickers combined for 318 passing yards. Cason Nabarrette led Permian with six catches for 142 yards and a score. Cameron Mattingly grabbed an interception and returned it for a touchdown. The win gives MOJO a 4-0 record in District 2-6A (8-1 overall) and a share of the district championship.
